Yes there are picnic facilities on the Fort grounds, including BBQ grills, picnic tables and a covered pavilion. Pets (on leash four feet or shorter) are welcome throughout the Fort, the Fort grounds, and the Visitor's Center. Pets are not allowed in the Penobscot Narrows Observatory and may not be left in a car unattended. Guests with wheelchairs will find the Fort's Gift Shop, Visitor's Center, Picnic Area and Restrooms accessible. While someone with a wheelchair can access the inner fort (parade ground) (refer to map in the brochure), the original granite steps and stairways in other parts of the Fort (a National Historic Site)will limit the access of anyone who is mobility impaired.
The pavilion may be reserved for $25. Call the Friends of Fort Knox office at 469-6553 for more information. Unfortunately we cannot reserve the other areas of the picnic grounds in advance, they are first come first serve. However the area is extensive enough to suit many visiting parties.
Yes! We have had a good many weddings and other special events at Fort Knox and now, the Penobscot Narrows Observatory over the past several years. Though one cannot exclude the visiting public from the sites during operational hours that have not prevented people from scheduling truly memorable events here. The special events that have taken place at the Fort and Observatory include wedding ceremonies, receptions, birthday parties, family and class reunions, parties and to corporate events. When scheduling your special day at the sites please let us know if you will be using a caterer, bringing in chairs, setting up tents or scheduling musicians. Due to State policy we are not permitted to allow alcohol during operating hours. Parking is somewhat limited, so you may want to avoid scheduling your event on our popular Special Event days (see Event page) The Friends of Fort Knox staff is ready to help you plan your special day and make it the success it deserves to be. Please fee free to call us to discuss the general details of your event so we can best accommodate you. You can reach the Friends of Fort Knox office at (207) 469-6553.
