Friends of Fort Knox 2009 Special Events Schedule Preliminary Friends of Fort Knox special event schedule. Check back often for additional events. Unless otherwise noted, regular Fort admission fees apply April 18th , Saturday, 10 A.M. until noon, Park Day clean-up Project: Held in conjunction with the Civil War Preservation Trust and the History Channel. Volunteers are needed to rake, sweep and pickup winter debris. T-shirts and a Fort Tour will be provided to volunteers.
May 1st, Fort Knox and Penobscot Narrows Observatory, Prospect, Maine reopens. The Fort Knox State historic site features one of America's best-preserved examples of seacoast fortifications constructed in the 1800s. The new Penobscot Narrows Observatory, the tallest bridge observatory open to the public in the world, boasts breathtaking views of the Penobscot Bay area. Visitors to the observatory ride an elevator up 420' feet on Maine's fastest elevator for incredible views. Admission to these attractions is only $5 for adults and $3 for children.Click here for Non-Resident Fees May 16, Saturday , Maine Foster Care Family Day, 11 AM to 4 PM 6th Maine Battery Cannon Firings - Saturday and Sunday, June 27th and 28th, 10 AM until 4 PM, a full-scale Civil War era Parrot cannon firing demonstration will take place throughout the day. This cannon is the real deal and will provide some explosive excitement for all who visit. Click Here for a YouTube Video of the Cannon Firing July 4th and 5th, Paranormal/Psychic Faire, Saturday and Sunday: Meet with people who believe in things unusual. This unique event features renowned crytozoologist and author, Loren Coleman (often seen on the History and Travel Channel), psychics, ghost hunters, UFOologists and dowsers. Date TBA, Saturday and Sunday, 10 A.M. to 4 P.M. - Granite cutting demonstration. This event will feature the skills necessary in the construction of Fort Knox.
6th Maine Battery Cannon Firings - Saturday and Sunday, July 18 & 19, 10 AM until 4 PM, a full-scale Civil War era Parrot cannon firing demonstration will take place throughout the day. July 25th and 26th, Saturday and Sunday, 20th Maine Company ‘B’ Civil War reenactment and Bucksport Chamber of Commerce Bucksport Bay Festival. Friday/Saturday, July 31 & August 1, from 8 PM to 10:30 PM – Moon Viewing at the Penobscot Narrows Observatory $5 per person (all ages) Rain and/or clouds will result in cancellation...call 469-6553 the evening of the event for recorded message if cancelled. August 1st - Maine Day, Free Admission to Maine Residents only to Fort Knox (Does not include admission to the Penobscot Narrows Observatory) August 3-7 Monday through Friday Archaeological Field School The field school will focus on a foundation of one of the "out" buildings of unknown use present during the construction phase of Fort Knox. The field school will offer students hands-on excavation techniques accompanied by classroom sessions that will include an introduction to historical archeology, evolution of U.S. Seacoast defenses and the construction and history of Fort Knox. Saturday, August 8 (rain date 8/9), Pirate Festival, 10 AM until 3 PM- Join the professional Pirates of the Dark Rose for a day of swashbuckling sword fights, duels, cannon fire and pirate ship attack. The pirate ship "Must Roos" will let loose cannon fire on the Fort as she sails the waters of the Penobscot River, in search of booty. The festival will feature a treasure hunt, pirate parade (all are encouraged to attend dressed in your best pirate attire), best dressed and most authentic sounding pirate contests. Bluegrass Comes to the Fort - Saturday, August 15, 6 PM, $5 per person (rain date Sunday 8/16) Anna Mae Mitchell & Rising Tide comes to Fort Knox, performing lyric tunes that they perform from New England to Nashville. September 5-6, Saturday and Sunday, Civil war encampment with Cotton's Battery, featuring authentic uniforms, rifle and cannon firings. September 12th , Saturday, The 7th Annual Medieval Tournament: Knights will have armored combat, medieval music played, arts and science displays will be on hand and an archery demonstration will take place. September 13, Sunday, DOUBLE HILL DUATHLON, 3-Mile Run / 15-Mile Bike Race. Prizes In All Age Categories. Team Prizes for Male/Female and Co-Ed Teams. Registration includes admission to park and Penobscot Narrow Observatory. $25.00 Individual. $35.00 Team. The bike leg climbs Fort Knox Hill from the Prospect side before finishing in front of the fort. On-site registration begins at 8:00 a.m. at base of observatory.
